As usual, MMHPA's annual ceremony is rewarding experience

There was something for everyone at last weekend's Mid-Maryland Horse and Pony Association's annual awards ceremony.

There was plenty of food and drink, door prizes, beautiful items on the silent auction table, dozens of trophies presented to the top point-earners in 60 classes and a surprise visit from a man in red driving a team of reindeer.

The one thing missing that was really needed was name tags.

"I know I won't recognize about 90 percent of the people," organizer Sandi Collins said with a laugh, "especially the people who show English -- I always see them with their helmets on!"

Master of ceremonies Bob Collins began the evening with a salute to the 1993 officers and special awards to hard-working show organizer Lynda Arnold and outgoing president Chris Morgan.

A new award was given in memory of Kristy Keith, an indefatigable show worker who died this year. Kristy was known for "setting up the best trail classes, riding English and loving the kids," Bob Collins said.

So the award in her memory was given to the high-point young English rider, Crystal Pickett, and her horse Sweetie Dawlin'. Another award went to Harford County resident Sandy Weinreich's horse Don's Expertise. This 8-year-old chestnut American quarter-horse gelding was honored by the Maryland Quarter Horse Association as high-point quarter horse in the MMHPA shows.

Morgan, who won the high-point trophy in the Western A Division, attributed this year's success to "all the officers, the board of directors and the hundreds of volunteers who made my work easy."

Mid-Maryland Horse and Pony Association Year-End High-Point Awards went to:

* Speed, Division A -- Michelle Stowers and Rajun Cajun; Division B -- Carey Fish and Butterscotch; Walk/Trot Division -- Ashley Atkins on Lacey Jay.

* Western, Division A -- Chris Morgan and Ima Better Bailey; Division B -- Jason Hartner and Jolly; Youth Division -- Amanda Naill and Lin's Dashin' Dandy; Walk/Trot Division -- Samantha Collins and Reynolds Smoke.
