Lottery deadline for 1994 dates is Friday

Area organizations have until Friday to make application for the Baltimore Municipal Golf Corporation's lottery for assigned dates for 1994 outings.

The lottery system was adopted two years ago as a means of fairly allocating available tournament dates at the corporation's five golf courses. The program also allows a group coordinator greater flexibility in scheduling available open dates.

The tournament lottery will be held Jan. 8, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Cromwell Bridge Holiday Inn (Beltway Exit 29).

All groups wishing to participate in the lottery must be pre-registered, with the properly completed forms due at the BMGC office, 6131 Hillen Road, by Friday at 5 p.m. Information is available from the corporate office or any of the five municipal courses -- Carroll Park, Clifton Park, Forest Park, Mount Pleasant and Pine Ridge.

Memorial service

A memorial service for George Jackson, a one-time club champion at Baltimore Country Club, will be held Wednesday at Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian Church, 1316 Park Ave., at 4 p.m.

Jackson, who died of cancer in Miami Beach, Fla., 10 days ago, was a long-time golfer who loved people in general, golfers in particular.

He reached the apex of his career in 1980, when, at the age of 38, he was a surprised and thrilled medalist in the Maryland State Men's Amateur championship with a 1-over-par 71 at the Green Spring Valley Hunt Club. Later that year, he won the club title at Baltimore CC, after having been runner-up two years before.

Show review

The recent Chesapeake Golf & Travel Show was so successful that a hall in the Convention Center has been reserved for the same weekend next year. More than 6,000 (about double last year's inaugural effort) attended the three-day event, with appearances by professionals Joe Inman and Don Massengale, instructional tips from Middle Atlantic PGA pros and a putting contest among the most popular attractions.

Through proceeds raised from the putting contest (a 45-foot shot to a regulation-sized cup), more than $1,000 was donated to charity.

Those making a hole-in-one were invited back for a putt-off on the final afternoon, and some 60 players (enough that the original flight had to be expanded to two with identical prizes) were on hand for the finale.

Dennis Winters, the Middle Atlantic PGA Assistants champion from Eisenhower GC, will be among the starters in the 17th annual Titleist/Foot-Joy PGA Assistants championship, scheduled to begin a four-day, 72-hole run on Tuesday at PGA West's Jack Nicklaus Private Course in La Quinta, Calif. . . . The Mid-Atlantic Golf Course Superintendents Association will hold an election of officers at its annual membership meeting Tuesday at Turf Valley CC. . . . Payne Stewart, the national honorary chairman for the RP Foundation Fighting Blindness, recently donated $28,000 to the Baltimore-based charity from his victory in the Skins game. During his three years of affiliation, Stewart has given the foundation $114,000. . . . PGA Tour member Fred Funk and W. Marshall Rickert, administrator of the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration, are chairmen for the Mid-Atlantic Golf Privilege Card, which entitles holders to free rounds of golf and other discounts. Proceeds from card sales will benefit the American Lung Association of Maryland. . . . Duke finished third and Oklahoma State 10th in the recent women's collegiate tournament at Palmetto Dunes, Hilton Head, S.C. Among the scorers for Duke was Pam Soliman, Lutherville, 77-85-80242, and for Oklahoma State, Arantxa Sison, who plays from Glenn Dale GC, 76-77-76229. . . . Bonnie View CC has announced the appointment of Robert Leeman as head golf professional. Leeman, an assistant professional at Saucon Valley CC in Bethlehem, Pa., since 1983, will assume his new duties Jan. 1.
