In an attempted robbery that went awry in a grocery store in Yonkers, N.Y., last night, a man shot four people in the head, killing one and critically injuring three others, the police said.

The shooting occurred shortly after 10 p.m. at the store, , about a mile north of the New York City border, said Lt. Lawrence McElrone, a police spokesman.

Two men were holding up the store when someone dialed 911 anonymously and informed the police of the robbery, Lieutenant McElrone said. Two men were captured and held for questioning, but were not identified by the police.

At St. Joseph's Hospital, where the injured were taken, relatives identified them as Anthony Roberts, Odilio Rodriguez and Gregorio Medina. Joan Dupay, a hospital spokeswoman, said all three men were in critical condition, but she would not confirm their identities.

Lieutenant McElrone said the man who was killed had been standing behind the counter. Two of the wounded were standing in the store's center aisle. The fourth man stumbled into a restaurant next door, La Roca, where he collapsed.
