Jonathan ranks No. 1 in a class of 264 students, one of about 10 seniors who hold a perfect grade-point average -- this with a load full of difficult gifted-and-talented and honors classes, and a spot on the varsity soccer team.

The 6-foot, 3-inch senior was captain of the soccer and indoor track teams this year. He also plays varsity lacrosse for the school and club soccer outside of school for a traveling team.

He is a National Honor Society member and a Maryland Distinguished Scholar semifinalist. He was named a scholar-athlete nine times and was recognized as the school's Outstanding Sophomore Athlete of the Year. He scored a cum laude in the annual National Latin Exam for three years.

He tutors students for the state functional math test in his spare time. Outside of school, he works on the Columbia Jewish Congregation social action committee, helping with food and clothes drives and delivering food to the elderly.

His advice for up-and-coming high school students: "Try their best throughout. Don't slack off. Everything counts in everything you do, whether good or bad."

Plans: Jonathan would like to study biomedical engineering in college. "It involves science and math, two fields I'm good at," he says.

His comments: "I like competing, especially against my friends. I like to be involved in school activities."
