Exchange cards come to baseball

December 05, 1993|By Ruth Sadler | Ruth Sadler,Staff Writer

Over the past two years, card companies have issued exchange cards for NBA and NFL cards.

Fleer is bringing the concept to baseball for 1994. Its exchange card will be redeemable for a nine-card set of players called up in 1994 but not included in the basic Fleer set. There will be one card for each defensive position.

The 720-card basic set features coating on both sides and gold stamping on all cards. Statistics are superimposed on the card back's photo. Everything's alphabetical, beginning with teams in the American League. Orioles are first, and the 24 cards run from Brady Anderson to Mark Williamson.

In the insert department, there are 205 insert cards in 12 sets, the most Fleer has issued. Notable sets feature AL Rookie of the Year Tim Salmon (who has autographed 2,000 cards), All-Stars, team leaders, prospects, league leaders, strikeout pitchers, sluggers and nine Pro Vision Art Cards that form a design when mounted in a sheet.

Collectors can add three Salmon cards through a mail-in offer. Fleer is also offering clothing by mail -- T-shirts and baseball caps.

Fleer is putting its cards in 15-, 21- and 23-card packs and promises at least one insert card per pack.
