A 22-year-old Union Bridge man was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore after his car collided with another car on U.S. Route 26 at the on ramp to U.S. Route 97 about 6 p.m. Thursday.

Thomas Lee Plunkert Jr. of the 13400 block of New Windsor Road was driving west on Liberty Road when an unidentified vehicle pulled in front of him, causing him to swerve left to avoid striking it, state police said.

Police said Mr. Plunkert lost control of his 1993 Plymouth Laser and it collided with an eastbound car, then spun off the highway into a ditch.

The driver of that car, identified as Dallas E. Wells, 54, of Baltimore County, also was taken to the trauma center, police said. He was treated and released.

The driver of the vehicle that pulled in front of Mr. Plunkert's car did not stop, police said.

Mr. Plunkert was in serious but stable condition Friday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
