Mary Ellen Dougherty, S.S.N.D., associate professor of English at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, was named the college's Mullan Distinguished Teacher for the 1993-'94 academic year.

Roland Park County School students Sarah Berger of Baltimore, Melissa Cully of Towson and Audrey Lucas of Roland Park have been named semifinalists in the 1994 National Merit Scholarship Program. Shanita M. Leake has been recognized as a Commended Student in the National Achievement Scholarship Program for Outstanding Negro Students. Other Commended Students were Kori Bell of Mount Washington, Rita Beyer of Rodgers Forge, Meghan Donnelly of Owings Mills, Brent McAllister of Armagh Village, Catherine Passano of Tuscany/Canterbury and Jessica Shelton and Caroline Smith of Towson.

Carroll Community College student Kelly Flaherty won first place in the persuasion category of the annual "Through the Looking Glass" novice speech tournament at Bloomsburg State College in Bloomsburg, Pa.
