COLLEGE PARK -- UMBC gave Maryland another good challenge last night at Cole Field House, but it still wasn't enough.

Butts' layup with 1:51 before the break.

The Retrievers hit only 13 of 41 first-half shots (.32 percent), but stayed close because Maryland missed all six of its three-point attempts and was out-rebounded 26-24.

Rhodes scored 12 points and Hipp had 10 to lead the Terps in the half, and Smith had eight points, five blocks and five rebounds.

Saunders' 11 points topped the Retrievers, who were hurt by the foul problems of Nixon, who was limited to seven minutes.
