49ers' Fagan's injury may not be serious

SANTA CLARA, CALIF — SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Kevin Fagan's knee injury may not be as serious as first feared by the San Francisco 49ers.

The veteran defensive end, hurt in Sunday's 35-10 rout of the Los Angeles Rams in Anaheim, was released from a Bay Area hospital yesterday after undergoing arthroscopic surgery.

According to 49ers vice president John McVay, Fagan had the medial collateral (or inside ligament) and some torn cartilage in his left knee repaired Monday night. But team physician Michael Dillingham reported no damage to the anterior cruciate, the major ligament in the knee.

Fagan has not been placed on injured reserve.
