The Howard County Youth Hockey League Squirt Huskies could manage only a tie and two losses over the weekend in the Sliver Stick Hockey Tournament played at Piney Orchard, Columbia and Benfield ice rinks.

The Chesapeake Chiefs won the Squirt championship, defeating the Valley Forge Colonials, 3-2, in the title game, with Andy Metzger scoring all three Chiefs goals.

For Howard County, however, the news wasn't as cheerful.

The Huskies opened the tournament with a 4-0 loss to Chesapeake despite solid efforts from Eli Martin and Adam Arnold on defense and Justin Keller, Nick Graves and Ryan Fenton on offense.

Howard bounced back in its next game, tying the American Eagles, 2-2. A strong defensive effort, anchored by goalie Kurt Carter and defensemen Matt Scott and Danny Fritz, held the Eagles to 15 shots on goal. Adam Levine and Derek Williams scored the Howard goals, with an assist going to Mike Kelly.

But the team finished tournament play on a sour note, falling to the Erie Bronze Lions, 5-1. Justin Bridle scored the lone Huskies goal, with Matt Collins earning the assist. Danny Baron and Kyle Fenton also had strong games.

The Huskies scored their greatest triumph in the Skills Competition, where Bridle tied for first in the shooting contest.
