Emily Yanero

School: Mount Hebron High School

Hometown: Ellicott City

Age: 17

When Mount Hebron seniors look at their yearbooks at future reunions, they'll see Emily's name listed proudly and prominently as editor of this year's "Valhalla." Her artwork will also decorate its cover.

Emily's talents encompass more than the arts. She is captain of this year's varsity basketball team and has been recognized as an all-county and all-metro player by this newspaper and others. She also lettered in tennis and volleyball.

She's a semifinalist in the Maryland Distinguished Scholar competition and a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Club and Senior Class Board. She volunteers as a Special Olympics guide, a basketball counselor and a tutor. She also helps with the school's canned food drive and at Hebron House, a senior citizen center.

Plans: Emily aspires to graduate from college with a combined degree in art, journalism and communications. She wants to become editor of an enrichment magazine for young people or to produce creative learning videos for children.

Her comments: "I love children and I'm a creative person. That's one way I can do both."
