COLLEGE PARK -- Sophomore David Garey scored on a 5-yard run and Watkins Mill held off a late charge by Montgomery County rival Winston Churchill en route to a 10-6 win in the Class 4A state football title game last night at the University of Maryland's Byrd Stadium.

The victory gave Watkins Mill (11-2) its first state championship, as well as redemption for a 7-6 loss to Churchill (12-1) earlier this season.

Gary scored on a 5-yard burst with 3:05 left in the third quarter to give the Wolverines a 7-0 lead.

With 7:51 to play in the game, kicker John Blackburn made it 10-0 with a 32-yard field goal.

Churchill quarterback Landrous Dove scored his team's lone touchdown on a 1-yard plunge with less than a minute left to make it 10-6. Watkins Mill recovered the ensuing on-side kick and ran out the clock.

1A: Beall 7, Boonsboro 6

Tight end Jeremy Holler caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Chris Fauble with 15 seconds left in the first half, and Boonsboro of Washington County held on to beat Beall of Allegany County in the Class 1A state football final.

All of the scoring took place in the final 15 seconds of the first half.

After Boonsboro (12-1) took a 7-0 lead, Beall (12-1) answered on the final play of the half, as Jason Feagley hit Todd Vogtman on a desperation heave, and the running back turned it into a 63-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 7-6 as time expired.

The Mountaineers missed the extra point.
