British bands to play, maybe for last time

The British military bands will play on at the Baltimore Arena -- at least for this year.

Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke said yesterday that he would not cancel the "Royal Regiments on Parade," a program by 80-odd British military musicians that will perform at the Baltimore Arena Dec. 8 as part of a nationwide tour.

But the mayor said he would have his staff investigate whether the units the performers are assigned to are involved in military operations in Northern Ireland and whether the performance is in conflict with the city's support of the MacBride Principles calling for fair employment standards in the province.

"If there is a conflict, we will not sign [another] contract," he said.

Mr. Schmoke's statement at yesterday's Board of Estimates meeting followed a plea by City Councilman Martin O'Malley that the city cancel the performance by the "Royal Regiments," citing "deplorable conduct" of the troops in Northern Ireland.

"The center of this controversy is human rights, not bagpipes," said the 3rd District Democrat.
