1993 All-harford County Girls Volleyball Team

November 24, 1993|By John W. Stewart

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

* Melissa Marzicola, Edgewood -- With a team as solid as the Rams, it was no wonder the players took turns producing the winning edge, but Marzicola, coming on strongly, provided the most experience. She was a second-team choice last year when she was called upon to do more things, but this group seemed to develop around her, with each player working hard to develop her own individual skills. For the season, Marzicola had accuracy percentages of 90 hitting and 90 passing (off 400 chances).

COACH OF THE YEAR

* Carey Wainwright, Edgewood -- Wainwright played volleyball while attending high school in Manteca, Calif., and one year at a junior college. She came to Edgewood after her marriage, having met her husband, an Edgewood High School graduate, while he was in the service. In three years, she took a program that had not won a match the year before her arrival and produced successive records of 5-7, 11-4 and 15-1. The loss came in the Class 2A North regional final to then-No. 4 Loch Raven in five games. "Before the season, we set goals we thought were reachable -- win the county and the region," Wainwright said. "I was wishing we could go unbeaten, and about halfway through the season, I saw that we could, but I didn't tell the girls. They were the ones who did it."

ALL-COUNTY FIRST TEAM

* Nydia Colon, Edgewood -- She earned her place by successfully setting at 95 percent, and serving at 87 percent, with 15 aces, and, although not hittingoften, finishing at 88 percent.

* Amy Finlayson, Bel Air -- A major factor in the Bobcats' reaching the Class 3A North regional, the 5-foot-11 senior hitter finished with 115 kills (7.2 per match), a 65 percent spiking percentage and an 80 percent serving percentage, with 108 service points, including 28 aces. This is her second straight first-team selection.

* Marika Krejci, Aberdeen -- This four-year veteran was an excellent server, averaging six points a game and better than three aces a match. A solid hitter at 5-10, she averaged five kills a game.

* Erika Pleasant, Edgewood -- She had to adapt when switched to a back-row position -- "When you don't normally play back there, there are some things you have to learn," Wainwright said -- and did well enough to become an 87 percent passer, an 80 percent hitter, with 100 kills, and better than a 90 percent server.

* Shawna Staten, Aberdeen -- A two-year veteran, she and Krejci, plus

serving leader Rosemary Eslinger and four-year veteran Tinisha Moore, were the leaders, as the Eagles made it to the Class 2A North regional before losing to Edgewood. Staten, a 5-11 junior, had game averages of five points and five kills.
