1993 All-harford County Field Hockey Team

November 24, 1993|By John W. Stewart

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

* Pam Gauss, Fallston -- Recognized as one who led by example, this forward was the perfect complement to scoring leader Susan Mackley. She got her points -- second on the team in

goals with seven, plus two assists -- but was even more valuable in creating offensive situations.

CO-COACHES OF THE YEAR

* Phyllis Hemmes, Bel Air -- This marked her 23rd season as head coach. Before the season started, she did not figure this team as a playoff entry, because several positions were unsettled, although there was quite a bit of experience. The team wound up 6-1 in the county, and defeated Parkville and Kenwood on its way to the state semifinals, in which it lost to Linganore, 1-0. Hemmes said, "The players were receptive to coaching, they picked up on a new system, and developed confidence." It started with the coach and the confidence came with the wins.

* Alice Puckett, Fallston -- In her 11th year as head coach, she guided the team to an undefeated season with two ties and her fifth state championship. Over the last seven seasons, the Cougars have won four state, five regional and six county titles. There was experience in front and back, but Puckett worked with two sophomore links who came along to fill the missing pieces in the championship puzzle. She is not afraid to play the younger players because she wants the best 11 out there. There are no guaranteed starters, so every player has to stay focused. A year ago, when Puckett was the Coach of the Year, her team lost in the regional final.

ALL-COUNTY FIRST TEAM

* Susan Mackley, Fallston -- The senior forward was her team's leading scorer with 13 goals and four assists, and was a first-team choice of the state's field hockey coaches association.

* Diana Rice, C. Milton Wright -- Like Gauss and Mackley, she is a repeat first-team All-County selection. She was the leading scorer for her third-place team in the county (6-5-1, 5-2), finishing with nine goals, one assist.

* Jamie Kunkel, Bel Air -- The midfield general from a link position, she scored eight goals. After the Bobcats lost in the semifinal, she could have been referring to herself as well as her teammates when she said, "We outdid the coach's expectations and we outdid ourselves."

* Kristin Murk, North Harford -- A link, she had the responsibility in the middle and provided offensive support in coach Barbara Waite's 4-3 alignment. She finished with one goal and three assists. She had the overtime goal that beat Edgewood, 1-0, in the last game of the season as the Hawks finished at 5-6-1, 3-3-1.

* Amy Rafalski, Bel Air -- She controlled the midfield attack, and her speed helped in getting three goals and six assists.

* Jamie Brogan, Havre de Grace -- The heart of the Warriors' FTC lineup, she was a key factor in the team's improvement to 3-7-2 after not winning a game last year.

* Teresa Clark, Bel Air -- She was the defensive leader in back for a team that went 11-2-2, including losing only to Fallston in the county, en route to the state semifinals. Before that game, she dislocated her finger and did not play.

* Julie Haire, Fallston -- Haire was the top back for the Class 2A state champions, who gave up two goals in 16 games (14-0-2). She was particularly outstanding in the state semifinal and final games, each a 1-0 victory. She was an honorable-mention pick on the state coaches' team.

* Judy Simon, Fallston -- She complemented Haire and together they were the keys to thwarting opposing offenses. For the season, the opposition took 43 shots on goal.

* Amy Price, Edgewood -- Rated among the "Players to Watch" by the state's field hockey coaches association and Rams coach Renda Respess, Price was cited for her ability to keep the score close in what might otherwise have been blowouts. The junior finished with 126 saves and a percentage of 77. Her teammates voted her their unsung hero and the most valuable player.
