Preparing Thanksgiving dinner: a rite of passage

It starts with a large, denuded bird taking up a disproportionate amount of room in the refrigerator. Midway through the meal there's the great cranberry sauce vs. cranberry jelly debate. It ends with dishes -- lots of dishes.

Don't you love Thanksgiving?

Giblets in hand, tomorrow marks my official debut as an adult -- it's my turn to play gracious hostess for the holiday dinner.

In preparation of my first 37-course dinner party, I have noted the following:

* An inventory of the silverware drawer will always find one teaspoon less than the number of dinner guests, forcing the oldest child to eat his peas with the spoon from his Swiss Army Knife.

* No matter how you fluff it, stuffing is still wet bread and an onion.

* A relish tray requires too much effort for a finished product full of pickle parts.

* Banquet's turkey pot pie is much, much easier.

* You can't be comfortable sharing a table with people who put little ruffled paper booties where the turkey's feet used to be. What's next, a little paper hat perched atop his decapitated neck?

Just call me the Martha Stewart of Glen Burnie.


When Santa arrives at 10 a.m. Friday at Marley Station's Center HTC Court, he can enjoy a performance by members of the Glen Burnie High Dance Company. This is the second consecutive year the students have been invited to entertain shoppers at the mall.

Under the direction of Dianne Ross, the company also will stage an expanded dance program, "A Very Special Christmas," at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Dec. 11. Additional performances are scheduled for two senior citizen centers and at a school assembly for Glen Burnie High students.

Glen Burnie is the only high school in the county with a dance company and a touring company, an offshoot of the full company. It is made up of selected students who perform for area schools and organizations. They will be performing for the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Christmas Brunch on Dec. 4.

Students performing with the touring company are: Jaime Graham, Lia Green, Dezi Jim, Jeane Kim, Stephanie LeCompte, Ossai Miazad, Kristen Noe, Lisa Richmond, Carol Smigal, Jaime Smith, Lesley Townsend and Shaunda Villones.


Children may drop off their letters to Santa at a North Pole mailbox in front of the Glen Burnie Improvement Association, 19 Crain Highway.

Volunteers from the GBIA will forward the requests to Santa. Letters with a return address will receive a response.

Mrs. Santa Claus will join the Ladies of the Elks 2266 at a craft show, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Elks lodge, Quarterfield and Stevenson roads.

Forty-three artisans will offer holiday decorations and gift items for sale. Food and beverages will be sold.

It's not too early to start thinking about where you will be when they ring in 1994.

The Country Club Estates Recreation Association is having a New Year's Eve Dinner-Dance from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the recreation hall on Paul Marr Drive.

Admission is $25 a person and includes dinner, dancing, hors d'oeuvres, beer and setups, hats, noisemakers, door prizes and champagne at midnight.

Tickets must be paid for by Dec.
