The girls first team at a glance

COACH OF THE YEAR

* Lou Menegatti, Loch Raven -- Regularly starting two seniors, three juniors, four sophomores and two freshmen, Menegatti helped his Raiders (16-1) to dethrone last year's county champion, Dulaney, 2-0, winner of this year's state 3A-4A title. The Raiders later became Baltimore County's first girls state champ, earning the 1A-2A crown, 2-0, over Hammond after being runners-up last year and in 1990. Loch Raven also gave top-ranked McDonogh (19-0) its toughest game of the year, leading, 1-0, at one time in an eventual 3-2 loss.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

* Alison Schroeder, senior, McDonogh, defense -- A first-team All-Metro pick last year, Schroeder (seven goals, eight assists) is this year's Baltimore Sun All-City/County Player of the Year. Her four-year varsity career includes first-team All-Catholic League honors each season, during which time she has played every position except goalie. A repeat first-team All-State selection, Schroeder has scored 20 goals with 16 assists over the last three seasons. A sweeper, she anchored the defense to an area-high 13 shutouts with 12 goals allowed -- all but two of which were scored off set plays. She keyed the victory over then top-ranked Hammond, in which 1992 All-Metros Kisha Jett and Kacy Williams were held scoreless. Schroeder is a fifth-year Olympic Developmental player and a four-time regional camp pick, and she made this year's regional team for her age group. Her club team credentials include stints with Virginia's State-Cup champ Vista United and the seven-time Maryland State Cup champ Columbia Crusaders, which has produced 14 All-Metros within the last three years.

ALL-CITY/COUNTY FIRST TEAM

* Abby Bausman, junior, Dulaney, midfield -- She was the third-leading scorer with 20 goals and 14 assists for the 3A-4A state champion Lions. She used a unique blend of speed and skills that earned her first-team All-State honors.

* Christina Coroneos, senior, McDonogh, midfield -- A finesse player, a first-team All-State selection and a repeat All-City/County pick, Coroneos scored five goals with 14 assists. In come-from-behind victories over Mercy, 3-1, and Loch Raven, 3-2, Coroneos -- a field general -- had the game-winning and game-tying goals, respectively, to help McDonogh maintain its No. 5 national ranking.

* Kara Cristaldi, junior, McDonogh, midfield -- This first-team All-State pick scored six goals with 16 assists. She used her keen marksmanship on the majority of McDonogh's corner kicks and throw-ins, occasionally sharing those duties with Coroneos.
