Gilchrest's lone vote

On Sunday, Maryland's Wayne T. Gilchrest was the sole Republican in the House of Representatives to vote for statehood for the District of Columbia.

To those who have followed his varied career, the Eastern Shore congressman's vote -- he called it a "symbolic" blow for %o democracy -- wasn't all that surprising. After all, says Mr. Gilchrest, he wouldn't be in Congress at all if a horse hadn't thrown him in the Idaho wilderness six years ago.
