Volunteer work: Ms. LeCompte volunteers her time on several fronts, but she is especially devoted to working with the county ++ chapter of the American Cancer Society and the Ostomy Association. In addition, she is involved in church-related activities and provides transportation assistance for some area senior citizens.

Volunteer's comments: "I can say for sure, the more positive patients look at matters, the more positive attitude they have, they do much better," says Ms. LeCompte, who was diagnosed and treated for cancer at age 15.

"For years I said, 'I hope I can do something for people,' but didn't take that first step. Once I did, I now feel like I have been a help to many people.

"As the co-editor for the county Ostomy Association newsletter, we put together helpful articles for each type of ostomy.

"I usually put in over 100 hours a month into volunteer work. I try to do what I can.

"Being on public education committees, both locally and on the state level, I try to tell people what they can do to protect themselves, what tests are available and what is recommended they should be doing to prevent cancer. Public education is the key to getting cured from cancer.

"I know this sounds strange, but I feel like my colostomy has made me a better person. It has helped me develop a positive attitude. I've never not done anything that I wanted to do because of it.

"I've been blessed in so many ways, I have many things to be thankful for and have lived a very rich and fulfilling life."

About the volunteer: Ms. LeCompte has been married 44 years and is the mother of two and a grandmother of seven.

A native of Baltimore, she has lived in the county for more than 40 years. She is a member of Pasadena United Methodist Church.
