Terps show spunk, lose to Aussies

COLLEGE PARK -- Judging by the enthusiasm of the crowd, the effort of the teams and the way Maryland coach Gary Williams worked the sidelines, it was difficult to tell that last night's game against the Australian National Team was an exhibition.

While the the youngest Maryland team in recent memory wound up losing, 85-79, it might have given the largest crowd (6,519) to watch an exhibition in Williams' five years at College Park some hope for the coming season. Especially its two prized freshmen, Joe Smith and Keith Booth.

Smith, a 6-foot-9 center from Norfolk, Va., scored a team-high 18 points and the Terps seemed to fade a bit after he fouled out with a little over two minutes left. Booth, a 6-6 forward from Baltimore, had 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

"That was the best team I ever played in an exhibition," Williams said of an experienced team that has won the first three games of a nine-game American tour, including an upset of 13th-ranked UCLA Wednesday night. "It does not hurt losing that game."

After falling behind by as many as 10 points in the first half and going ahead by as many as six twice in the second, Australia took control when Smith fouled out. Actually, it was former Seton Hall star Andrew Gaze who took control.

Gaze, who helped Seton Hall to the 1989 Final Four, scored eight points in the final 3:45 to finish with a game-high 23. His three-point play on the play in which Smith departed opened up a 75-71 lead. The Australians pushed that lead to 80-72.
