Orioles -- Named Don Buford bench and outfield coach. Moved Jerry Narron from bench coach to third-base coach.

Colorado Rockies -- Claimed OF Darrell Sherman, once Orioles property, off waivers from the San Diego Padres.

Detroit Tigers -- Announced the return of the entire coaching staff. Purchased P Ben Blomdahl, P Felipe Lira, P Shannon Withem, IF Brian DuBose and IF Tony Clark from Triple-A Toledo. Purchased P Jose Lima from Double-A London. Assigned outright to Toledo P Frank Gonzalez, P David Haas, IF Ivan Cruz and OF Riccardo Ingram.

Florida Marlins -- Named Harvey Dorfman instructor-counselor in charge of performance enhancement and staff development at the major- and minor-league levels.

Houston Astros -- Purchased the contracts of 2B James Mouton and OF Jimmy White from Triple-A Tucson. Purchased the contracts of P Alvin Morman, P Jim Dougherty, P Kevin Gallaher and 1B Roberto Petagine from Double-A Jackson.

New York Mets -- Claimed C Joe Kmak off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers.

San Francisco Giants -- Placed C Craig Colbert on waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release. Purchased the contract of IF-OF John Patterson from Triple-A Phoenix.

Seattle Mariners -- Announced that P Norm Charlton refused a minor-league assignment and chose free agency. Agreed to terms with OF Keith Mitchell on a one-year contract with Triple-A Calgary. Gave C Brian Deak his unconditional release.

Texas Rangers -- Purchased the contracts of P James Hurst, P Julio Santana, OF Rusty Greer and OF Desi Wilson from Triple-A Oklahoma City and P Duff Brumley and OF Terrell Lowery from Double-A Tulsa.

Toronto Blue Jays -- Designated OF Turner Ward and OF Juan de la Rosa for assignment. Purchased the contracts of P Lee Daniels, P Dennis Gray, P Paul Spoljaric, IF Tilson Brito, OF Rick Holifield and C Angel Martinez from Triple-A Syracuse and IF Howard Battle from Double-A Knoxville.

Indiana Pacers -- Placed F Derrick McKey on the injured list. Activated F Kenny Williams from the injured list.

NCAA -- Suspended Southern Illinois basketball C Marcelo da Silva five games for violating book-loan privileges to obtain textbooks and computer software for friends.

Butkus Award -- Announced that Nebraska senior Trev Alberts, Florida State junior Derrick Brooks and UCLA junior Jamir Miller are the finalists for the award, given annually to college football's top linebacker. The winner will be chosen by a 24-member committee and announced Dec. 11.

Baylor -- Dismissed RB Robert Strait, who scored four touchdowns last week, for unspecified violations of team policy.

Florida State -- Announced that WR Tamarick Vanover's one-game suspension is for missing classes.

Sunshine State Conference -- Announced that commissioner Bob Vanatta has resigned, effective June 30, and accepted a new position as consultant.

Union College, Ky. -- Fired football coach Matt Ballard, defensive coordinator John Gilliam, and running backs coach Kent Green.

Cycling

Coors Light Cycling Team -- Announced that Alexi Grewal, 33, the only male Olympic road champion in U.S. history, is retiring.
