Top male

Jason Reckner, Old Mill

Cross country

Reckner on Saturday became the first boy from Anne Arundel County to win the Class 4A state cross country championship. Reckner covered the 3-mile course at Hereford High in 16 minutes, 8 seconds and was first by 22 seconds.

"His strength is downhill running and the course was perfect for him," Old Mill coach Gary Bater said.

Top female

Mary Jo Mahoney, Severna Park

Field hockey

Coach Lil Shelton said Mahoney, a senior captain, was the prime reason Severna Park (16-0) held Richard Montgomery (12-4) to one goal in winning its second straight state 4A title in field hockey, 2-1 in overtime.

"Defensive players usually don't get much publicity, but Mary Jo gets the other team's leading scorer and does not allow them any shots," Shelton said after her seventh state championship overall. "Her play was so crucial in the backfield and Richard Montgomery didn't get but six shots on goal."

Football

Jason Poknis, Southern

Poknis, a senior, stood out on both sides of the ball for the Dawgs (10-1) in their first playoff game, a 14-12 Class 2A quarterfinal victory over Potomac (9-2) Saturday.

At running back, Poknis carried 13 times for 107 yards, including a 3-yard touchdown plunge.

At defensive end, he made a host of tackles, including one sack and a game-saving stop with nose guard Philip Brown to thwart a two-point conversion attempt with 6:50 remaining.

Boys soccer

Andy Sheehan, Severna Park

After making six saves in regulation and two overtimes, Sheehan rejected two more shots in a 6-2 shootout taken by the Falcons for a 2-1 victory over Northwestern of Prince George's in the state 4A semifinals.

Girls soccer

Shannon Chaney, Severna Park

Just a sophomore, Chaney recorded her 13th shutout with 10 saves, as the Falcons (14-1) advanced to Friday's state 3A-4A final with a 1-0 victory over Centennial. Chaney has not given up a goal in three regional playoff victories and yielded only five in the regular season.

Girls cross country

Kristen Nicolini, Annapolis

As expected, this Annapolis junior won the state 4A championship at Hereford High on Saturday. Nicolini's winning time of 18 minutes, 26 seconds gave her a sweep of the county, region and state titles.

Volleyball

Susan Wren, Severna Park

Coach Tim Dunbar said Wren "orchestrated" the offense in three-game sweeps of Glen Burnie and Northern of Calvert County for the Class 4A East Region championship. Wren had 64 assists, six aces, two blocks and two kills in the victories, which put Severna Park into tomorrow's state semifinals at Watkins Mill.

Note: Nominations should be called into Pat O'Malley's 24-Hour Sportsline, (410) 647-2499, by 9 p.m. Sundays and should
