Approval recommended for historic district

The county Planning Board has recommended approval of a historic district for Elkridge that would put strict controls on the way the area is developed.

The proposal now goes to the County Council, which first must change the guidelines spelling out the duties of the county's Historic District Commission. The commission currently governs development and architectural standards in Ellicott City's historic district.

The proposed historic district would include 54 homes along Lawyers Hill Road, Old Lawyers Hill Road, Elibank Drive and Belmont Woods Road.

Three homes, including one which dates to the mid-1800s, have been excluded from the district at the request of their owners.

Planning Board members approved the recommendation 4-0 on Wednesday, urging council members to appoint an ex-officio member to the commission immediately to give Elkridge representation.

County Council members, sitting as the Zoning Board, plan to schedule a public hearing on the creation of the district.
