ATF joins search for cause of Greeway Bowling Center fire

November 11, 1993

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is working with the county Fire Marshal to determine what caused the Oct. 22 fire that destroyed the Greenway Bowling Center.

Fire department spokesman Battalion Chief Gary Sheckells said investigators have learned the 5-alarm blaze started in the ceiling above the second story. Nobody was upstairs at the time, and the fire smoldered undetected until a passerby saw smoke and went inside to alert the manager.

Greenway workers had suspected the blaze began between the wood roof and the second-floor ceiling of the building, on Greenway near Crain Highway.

Chief Sheckells said the federal agency was brought into the investigation because it has more sophisticated equipment to test items retrieved from the fire. Investigators hope to pinpoint the cause of the fire within two weeks, he said.
