A 25-year-old Columbia man involved in a high speed chase with police was severely injured late Monday when his Ford Mustang crashed into the side of a tractor-trailer near Savage.

Bernard Yve Bourque, 25, of the 9600 block of Hingston Downs in the Guilford area was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was reported in serious condition yesterday.

Police said Mr. Bourque was attempting to elude a Laurel police officer in a chase north on U.S. Route 1 toward Howard County.

Mr. Bourque's speeding 1988 Mustang ran a red light at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Whiskey Bottom Road and struck a tractor-trailer turning south onto U.S. 1 at 11:19 p.m., police said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Samuel Wilson Jr. of District Heights, was not injured, county police said.

Charges against Mr. Bourque were pending an investigation of the accident, police said.
