NEEL DESAI

School: Wilde Lake High School junior

Hometown: Columbia

Age: 16

When Wilde Lake's junior class looks to a leader, it looks to Neel, who has served as class president for three years.

Neel is part of the school's state champion Math Team and the It's Academic team. He's the founding officer of the Chemistry Club and a member of the International Club.

He's also a peer mediator and a varsity tennis player. He volunteers at the Howard County General Hospital and is a school blood drive coordinator for the Red Cross.

He was nominated twice for "Who's Who Among American High School Students," a listing of outstanding students throughout the nation, and he served as a Hugh O'Brien Leadership ambassador.

Before he entered high school, he traveled solo on an African safari to Zimbabwe and Zambia.

"It made me grow up really fast," he says. "And I got to spend time with different people who didn't speak English. We had to communicate through facial expressions."

Plans:Neel wants to go to medical school but is unsure where. "Being a comedian and being a doctor has a lot of similarities. I like to make people laugh. Medicine is a path to do that."

His comments:"It's really a great feeling for me to see someone smile because of what I've done."
