Q: I have been to several Elderhostel programs and enjoyed them very much. However, I heard someone talking about her great experience at a Senior Ventures program. Could you please inform me whom to contact on this?

A: I tracked down Senior Ventures programs at nine universities in the western United States, and they sound a lot like Elderhostel: Folks of retirement age spend time on a college campus, take enrichment courses, go on field trips and do a lot of socializing, with theater, concerts and movies in the evenings. Like Elderhostel, it's a relative bargain (about $500 a week in a double room, $570 single occupancy, including room, meals, classes, field trips and activities; participants pay their own way to campus).

Sheri Heger, secretary of senior programs at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Wash., said programs exist in Washington, Oregon, California, New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado. There may be more such programs in other parts of the nation, but she has no information on them.

Senior Ventures programs run for two or four weeks, Ms. Heger said, and in addition to the listed programs, Central Washington, as an example, has a swimming pool, tennis courts and miles of walking paths. Ellensburg is 120 miles east of Seattle.

Costs vary according to accommodations.
