Patterson rolls, 19-6, clinches playoffs

No. 8 Patterson secured a state playoff berth in the first year of eligibility for Baltimore City public schools with a 19-6 victory over visiting Southern of Baltimore yesterday in a City 4A League game.

Senior running back Ryan Lewis led the Clippers (9-1, 6-0) with 101 yards on 13 carries. Lewis also scored on a 13-yard run.

Junior quarterback Willie McGirt completed 11 of 20 passes for 174 yards, including two touchdowns to senior wide receiver Stacey Plater. McGirt's 4-yard touchdown pass to Plater put Patterson ahead to stay, 7-6.

Calvert Hall 22, Mt. St. Joe 21

Sophomore Dan Rosewaj returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown with 2:30 left to lift host Mount St. Joseph past Calvert Hall in an MSA Armstrong A Conference game. It was the only time that the Gaels (3-7, 1-5) had the lead over the Cardinals (4-4, 0-3) in the game.

Rosewaj, a wide receiver, had 151 yards of total offense and two touchdowns. He also had 10 tackles as a defensive back.

Two of Mount St. Joe's three touchdowns came on special teams. Senior Julius Weems began the Gaels' scoring with an 80-yard kickoff return, and Rosewaj followed with the game-winning punt return.

Eddie Pailen ran for 102 yards on 19 carries for Mount St. Joe.

Southern-A 30, South River 14

Senior running back Corey Contee had 94 yards and two touchdowns as No. 7 Southern-AA (9-1, 3-0) rolled past visiting South River (2-6, 1-2) in an Anne Arundel County 2A-3A game.

Pikesville 38, Loch Raven 15

Senior running back Larry Galbreath rushed for 167 yards on 19 carries and scored two touchdowns and one conversion to lead visiting Pikesville (3-7, 3-6) past Loch Raven (1-9, 1-7) in a Baltimore County 1A-2A League game.

The victory marks the final game for Pikesville coach Curt Boushell, who will retire after 27 years.

Senior tight end Josh Katz made nine catches for 148 yards, including two touchdown receptions.

Gibbons 57, Spalding 0

Kevin Dukes scored twice and ran for 129 yards on just three carries asvisiting Gibbons routed Spalding (1-9, 0-5). The Crusaders (5-2-1, 4-0-1) gained a tie with St. Paul's, a 26-0 winner over Boys' Latin, for the MSA Armstrong B Conference title.

Forest Park 15, Edmondson 0

Senior running back Robert Arthur III had 23 carries for 179 yards and one touchdown as Forest Park (6-4) shut out visiting Edmondson (0-9) in a non-league game.

Senior safety James Heath had two interceptions and returned a punt for 40 yards.

Carver 14, Northern 0

Sophomore quarterback Troy Austin had eight carries for 76 yards and one score as host Carver (5-5, 1-3) downed winless Northern (0-10, 0-4) in a Baltimore City 3A League game. Nathan Thomas had three solo tackles and one fumble recovery.

Severn 19, Curley 0

Junior tailback John Vereen ran for 137 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries as visiting Severn (4-5, 3-2) shut out Curley (3-6, 1-4) in an MSA B Conference game.

Vereen, the third-leading rusher in the metro area, also threw a 48-yard pass for a touchdown. Senior linebacker Scott Singleton led the defense with five tackles, six assists and an interception.

Douglass 22, Northwestern 14

Senior slotback Felix Jones had six carries for 85 yards to lead Douglass (4-5) past host Northwestern (1-8) in a non-league game.

Senior quarterback Jeremy Turlington completed two of three passes for 30 yards and sophomore linebacker Sam Womack finished the season with 107 tackles for Douglass.

Edgewood 25, Joppatowne 8

Senior tailback Keene Turner had 20 carries for 121 yards and senior tailback Kenton Worthington had 14 carries for 70 yards as Edgewood (5-5, 5-3) defeated Joppatowne (7-3, 5-3) in a Harford County League game.

Senior defensive end Rodney Briscoe had two fumble recoveries for 105 yards.

Aberdeen 35, Havre de Grace 0

Senior Nick Johnson had 13 carries for 135 yards to lead Aberdeen (5-4, 4-4) over Havre de Grace (2-8, 1-7) in a Harford County game.

Senior defensive back Charles Cromwell had 13 tackles and two sacks.

Arundel 20, Meade 7

Sophomore quarterback Pat Cilento completed 4 of 8 passes for a 108 yards and one touchdown and one conversion as visiting Arundel (6-4, 5-2) defeated Meade (2-8) in an Anne Arundel County League game.

Senior running back Tony Costanzo had one touchdown reception for 56 yards.
