Man, 60, struck by car while crossing road, dies

A 60-year-old man died yesterday after he was struck by a car while crossing All Saints Road in Laurel.

Stanley Ray Kiaser of Naylor Avenue in Laurel was pronounced dead at Greater Laurel Beltsville Hospital about an hour after the 6:05 p.m. accident, Howard County police said.

Mr. Kiaser was walking across the two-lane roadway near the intersection of Route 216 when he apparently stopped on the center line and then decided to -- to the other side, Officer Owen Smith said.

Before Mr. Kiaser could reach the other side, he collided with a 1992 Jeep Wagoneer driven by Martin Lepore of Laurel, Officer Smith said. The roadway has no signals or crosswalks, he said.

No charges have been filed against Mr. Lepore, but an investigation is continuing, the officer said.

The man entered a service office at the Crown station in the 9200 block of All Saint Roads about 6:20 p.m., announced a robbery and demanded cash.

Police said the clerk turned over an undisclosed sum and the robber ran into the parking lot. The robber was described as a black male in his 20s, wearing a cream-colored coat, blue jeans, a black baseball cap and a red and white flannel shirt.

Anyone with information should call county police at 313-2266.
