'Eye to Eye' with Heidi and a hostage, too

There's a full-course meal of prime-time sitcoms served up tonight by NBC, as well as a fresh "Simpsons" and some fairly noteworthy nonfiction offerings.

* "Mad About You" (8-8:30 p.m., WMAR-Channel 2) -- They've already had one flashback on this series, showing how Paul (Paul Reiser) and Jamie (Helen Hunt) first met. Now, in a bit of revisionist history, another flashback hints at a previous meeting -- decades earlier. NBC.

* "The Simpsons" (8-8:30 p.m., WBFF-Channel 45) -- Marge, along with a character whose voice is provided by Pamela Reed, pulls a "Thelma & Louise" in this episode and runs from the law. One big bonus: The narrator at the end of the show, intoning the fates of the various "criminals," is George Fenneman, who did the same job all those years on "Dragnet." Fox.

* "Wings" (8:30-9 p.m., WMAR-Channel 2) -- Joe (Tim Daly), normally the nice guy, explodes in frustration in this opening installment of a two-parter. Advance press materials call it "groundbreaking," but I couldn't see any ground broken. Just a glass door. NBC.

* "Seinfeld" (9-9:30 p.m., WMAR-Channel 2) -- Tonight's challenge: Can the folks at "Seinfeld" milk fat laughs out of a possibly fattening brand of nonfat yogurt? NBC.

* "Matlock" (9-10 p.m., WJZ-Channel 13) -- Milton Berle guest stars as a comedian who can't stop telling jokes, even when he's on trial for murder. It's obviously a labor of love for Berle, because the original "Mr. Television" co-wrote (with Stephen Lord) this role expressly for himself. ABC.

* "Frasier" (9:30-10 p.m., WMAR-Channel 2) -- Pa- tricia Crowley guest stars -- welcome news for fans of that old, little-seen sitcom "Please Don't Eat the Daisies." NBC.

* "L.A. Law" (10-11 p.m., WMAR-Channel 2) -- Benny (Larry Drake) takes a new tack with Rosalie (Kathleen Wilhoite), while Denise (Debi Mazar) gets a new offer -- for movie stardom. NBC.

* "PrimeTime Live" (10-11 p.m., WJZ-Channel 13) -- Diane Sawyer fronts an examination of jeweler's scams involving diamonds, a report that sounds like a real gem. ABC.

* "Eye to Eye With Connie Chung" (10-11 p.m., WBAL-Channel 11) -- One scoop per hour apparently isn't enough for Chung.

Not only does she land the first TV interview with Michael Durant, the army officer recently held hostage in Somalia, but she also has an interview with the infamous Heidi Fleiss. CBS.

Cable

* "Archaeology" (8-8:30 p.m., TLC) -- "Unearthing the Slave Trade" is an episode devoted to the recently discovered African burial mound located beneath downtown Manhattan. The secrets of its examination are revealing.
