NFL may move up expansion Mid-November decision expected after urging

Baltimore's expansion wait may be over 10 days earlier than initially expected, possibly as early as Nov. 17.

NFL team owners last Tuesday voted to give one of a planned pair of expansion franchises to Charlotte, N.C., but deferred awarding the second team because of disagreement among the committees considering the issue.

A resolution passed by owners in Rosemont, Ill., called for the second franchise to be awarded Nov. 30 to Baltimore, St. Louis, Memphis, Tenn., or Jacksonville, Fla.

But league officials, at the urging of the four finalists, now are exploring a meeting the week of Nov. 15, said NFL spokesman Greg Aiello. He said a decision should be made by the end of this week, with Nov. 17, 18 and 19 the most likely dates.

ESPN reported last night that the meeting would be Nov. 18.

"Sometime during that week," Aiello said. "It's just a matter of finding a place to do it."

He said the league is considering a number of centrally located sites, including Atlanta, Chicago and Dallas.

Commissioner Paul Tagliabue said last week that the owners would not adjourn the meeting until they selected a second city.
