KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii -- Troy Jacobson, a 24-year-old pro from Timonium, was 35th in the Ironman Triathlon World Championship on Saturday, finishing in 8 hours, 55 minutes, 40 seconds.

The winner, Mark Allen, 35, of Cardiff, Calif., overtook cramping Pauli Kuiru with about eight miles left and cruised to a fifth straight title in a course-record 8:07:45.

Women's winner Paula Newby-Fraser of Encinitas, Calif., claimed record-tying sixth Hawaiian women's victory in 8:58:23.

Jacobson finished his marathon in 3:02:40, benefiting from weather conditions that included little wind, temperatures that only reached into the high 80s and a brief rain.

Kathrine Mandrin, 35, of Arnold was Maryland's leading female finisher, placing 123rd out of 259 in 11:41:25.

Maryland finishers also included Lyn Brooks, 45, of Baltimore, who completed the race for the 14th time -- more than any other woman -- in 13:35:59. She was 14th in her age group.

Brooks, who first entered in the first of the two 1982 events, has participated every year since and now has tied Scott Tinley and Tom Warren for most finishes.
