Loyola wins 6th straight soccer game, routing Canisius, 6-0 COLLEGES

Chris Doyle scored a career-high two goals to lead No. 22 Loyola (14-2, 7-0) to a 6-0 victory over Canisius (1-13, 0-6) in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference soccer game yesterday. It was Loyola's sixth straight victory.

Doyle, who normally starts at midfield, played at forward yesterday for injured Will Cirrincione.

Defender Billy Harte scored his first goal of the season at the 23:40 mark, and Loyola led 2-0 at halftime.

Bill Wnek gave the Greyhounds a 3-0 lead early in the second half, and Bill Heiser, Tim Shields and Doyle scored within five minutes of each other late in the game.

Zach Thornton (John Carroll) and Peter Trizzino combined for the Greyhounds' 13th shutout of the season, tying the school record set last season.

* UMBC 4, Stetson 1: Junior Rob Elliott (Calvert Hall) had a goal and an assist to lead UMBC (13-2-1) over host Stetson (5-10-1) in the championship game of the Eighth Annual Florida Invitation Cup.

The Retrievers took a 3-0 halftime lead on goals by Rob Hoch, Bryan Bugarin (Calvert Hall) and Elliott. Tim Ryerson (Oakland Mills) added a second-half goal to extend the lead to 4-0.

Sophomore J. J. Kremer (Calvert Hall) was named tournament MVP and offensive MVP, and Elliott, Ryerson and Joe Bailey (Archbishop Curley) were named to the all-tournament team.

* Towson 2, Liberty 2: Junior Pat Coyle and sophomore Kevin Smith scored first-half goals off assists from sophomore Todd Hicks, as Towson (5-8-1, 3-4-1) played to a Big South Conference tie with Liberty (10-3-1, 5-3-1).

The Tigers ended the Liberty's shutout streak at four games when Smith scored his first goal of the season 13 minutes into the game.

Liberty trailed 2-0 at halftime.

Rich Pellegrini (John Carroll) made five saves for the Tigers.

* Long Island 3, Mount St. Mary's 1: Giovanni Savarese scored all three goals to lift visiting Long Island (7-9, 4-3) over Mount St. Mary's (5-9, 2-5) in a Northeast Conference game.

The Mountaineers, who lost their eighth straight, took a 1-0 lead on Mark Wimmer's first collegiate goal with 13:14 remaining in regulation.

Savarese, the 1992 NEC Player of the Year, forced the overtime on a penalty kick with 8:29 left.

Long Island outshot the hosts, 25-12, and Mount goalie Keith Kennedy recorded eight saves.

* Swarthmore 5, Goucher 2: Junior forward Nathanial Fairman scored two goals, including the game-winner, to lead host Swarthmore (8-4-2) past Goucher (7-8). Swarthmore outshot ,X Goucher 22-13. Ethan Roberts made eight saves for Goucher.

* Johns Hopkins 2, Washington College 1: Jon Giordani and Mogbeyi Omatete scored to lead Johns Hopkins (8-5) over host Washington College (6-8-3).

* Catonsville CC 4, Hagerstown JC 1: Chris Walton contributed two goals, as Catonsville CC (10-2-1) defeated host Hagerstown CC.

* Gallaudet 3, Villa Julie 0: Rick Borehardt had a goal and an assist as host Gallaudet beat Villa Julie.

Women's soccer

* Loyola 4, Hofstra 3, OT: Lynda Lohsen scored her second hTC goal of the game with 2:15 remaining in the first overtime period to lift Loyola (11-3-2) past host Hofstra (4-11-1).

Gina Roberts (Severna Park) sent the game into overtime when she scored on an assist from Betsy Given (Broadneck) with 2:30 left in regulation. Lohsen scored her fifth goal of the season in the overtime, extending the Greyhounds' unbeaten streak to five games.

*Charleston Southern 2, Towson 1, 2 OT: Freshman Wendy Ennis scored the go-ahead goal with 10:05 remaining in the second overtime, as Charleston Southern (12-5, 3-5) edged Towson State (7-8, 2-5) in a Big South Conference game.

Ennis' goal ended a defensive struggle in which the Tigers played the last 80 minutes of the game a player short due to the ejection of sweeper Nicole Reabe.

Kay Benson had given Charleston Southern a 1-0 lead when she scored on a penalty kick with 4:20 left in the first half.

Despite playing short-handed, the Tigers tied the game with 17:54 to go in regulation on a goal by junior Kathy Green (St. Mary's).

Junior Susie Blanco made 18 saves, including two penalty kicks, for the Tigers.

* Goucher 2, Frostburg State 1: Christine Simone and Kari Linfors scored one goal each to take Goucher (5-10-1) past Frostburg State.

Libby Snyder and Beth Shew had one assist each for Goucher, and Chanon Watson made three saves.

* College of Notre Dame 2, Lynchburg 0: Kelly Stephenson and Megan Truxel scored, as the College of Notre Dame (10-4-1) shut out Lynchburg.

* Haverford 2, Western Maryland 1: Lillian Gallagher and Liz Landrigan scored first-half goals to lift Haverford past Western Maryland (1-10-2, 0-4-2) in a Centennial Conference game.

Junior Paula Moyer (South Carroll) brought Western Maryland back with her first goal of the season with 24:31 remaining in the first half.

Sarah Kephart (Loch Raven) stopped 32 shots for the Green Terrors.
