A tug of war between a small, 83-year-old woman and a large man cost the victim her money, but landed a suspected assailant in jail Friday.

Virginia Stoner told Westminster police she was walking toward her home on Park Street about 11 p.m. Oct. 13, when a tall man came out of a nearby alley and grabbed her purse.

Mrs. Stoner said that she struggled with her assailant, but he overpowered her, pulling the pocketbook from her arm. She said he almost knocked her to the ground before he fled with the purse, which contained $100.

In their reports, city police said they received a tip shortly after the robbery and recovered the purse, minus the money, on a sidewalk along Main Street.

Anthony Darnell Oram, 31, of the first block of Chase St., was arrested Friday and charged with robbery, assault, battery and theft. Police described him as 6 feet 4 inches tall, weighing 190 pounds. In a bail hearing before a court commissioner, bond for ** Mr. Oram was set at $50,000. He was being held in the Carroll County Detention Center.

Mrs. Stoner said she was not injured.
