Maryland wins, 2-1, upsetting defending champ Old Dominion

COLLEGE PARK -- Amy Schubert assisted on a first-half goal and scored the game-winner in the second half, as Maryland's field hockey team upset defending national champion Old Dominion, 2-1, yesterday.

The last time Maryland (13-2) defeated Old Dominion (11-3-1) was six years ago, when the Terps won the national championship. Maryland and Old Dominion were tied for fourth in the national polls.

Karen Neiss gave Old Dominion a 1-0 lead on a breakaway with 29:01 left in the first half. Maryland's Laura Harmon tied it 3:52 later on a penalty-corner shot, assisted by Sabrina Salam and Schubert.

Schubert scored from inside the circle with 20:19 left in the game. Maryland outshot Old Dominion 14-4.
