October 18, 1993

A 20-year-old man who was shot after allegedly threatening a city police officer with a 9 mm handgun Saturday night has been charged with assault with intent to murder and five other counts, authorities said last night.

The suspect, Luther D. Dunbar Fitzgerald of the 400 block of Rosecroft Terrace, was in fair condition last night at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center with a wound to his right shoulder.

Mr. Fitzgerald also was charged with two handgun violations and three drug offenses, including possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

The shooting occurred after Southern District Officer Richard Pollack Jr., 23, confronted several men suspected of involvement in a drug deal in the 1500 block of W. Pratt St. about 6 p.m.

Mr. Fitzgerald ran from the scene into a home in the 200 block of S. Parrish St. where the officer confronted him in the entryway. When Mr. Fitzgerald started to raise a handgun, the officer shot him in the shoulder, police said.

L Police found several vials of crack cocaine on Pratt Street.

The officer was placed on administrative duty pending an investigation.
