The Taneytown government has taken another step in its municipal improvement program by voting to pave a 31-car parking area for the city swimming pool.

The City Council voted last week to amend its street-paving project list by blacktopping dirt and grass previously used for parking at the pool, located in Taneytown Memorial Park.

Clerk/Treasurer Linda M. Hess said the city has contracted Stambaugh's of Union Bridge to do the work for $10,813.

The council talked briefly about providing a gravel lot instead of a paved one at the swimming pool and re-evaluating the options next year.

However, Ms. Hess said that waiting until spring or summer to pave the lot would conflict with the pool's operating season.

The city also discussed several paving projects to be completed what the government calls its Streets Program.

Projects in the program include Park Pavilion Road, Playground and Pool roads, Roberts Mill Road, Fairview Avenue, Daisy Court, Taneytown High School Park parking lot, Chestnut Court, Stumptown Road, First and Second streets, Ash and Merwyn drives and Grand Drive.

In addition, the government is planning to repave parking areas in the Cloverberry development.

The city has completed property assessments of parking spaces in Berry and Clover courts, to clarify which residents own which spaces, City Attorney Thomas F. Stansfield said during the council meeting Monday.

In those courts, "parking spaces are owned by the property owner," Ms. Hess said.

Ms. Hess said the city needed "to know who owns the spaces so we can assess a fee."

Although the Cloverberry repaving project is not budgeted this fiscal year, Ms. Hess said, the city is working on property assessments as a preliminary step.
