A city police officer shot a drug suspect in the shoulder last night after the man threatened him with a gun in a hallway of a South Baltimore home, police said.

Luther D. Dunbar Fitzgerald, 20, of the 400 block of Rosecroft Terrace, was taken by ambulance to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was listed in serious condition last night.

Sam Ringgold, a police spokesman, said Southern District Officer Richard Pollack Jr., 23, who has been on the force one year, confronted several men believed to be involved in a drug deal in the 1500 block of Pratt Street about 6 p.m.

Officer Pollack chased one of the men around the corner. The man entered the rear door of a home in the 200 block of S. Parrish St. The officer went to the front door.

Who opened the front door was unclear, but Mr. Ringgold said the officer confronted the man in the entryway. He said that when the man started to raise a 9mm handgun, the officer shot once hitting him in the right shoulder.

Mr. Ringgold said police recovered several vials believed to contain crack cocaine on Pratt Street. He said police also found a "large amount" of money on the suspect.

The officer was placed on administrative duty pending an investigation. Charges are pending against Mr. Fitzgerald, police said.
