The Howard Lions could do no wrong in last night's 28-6 trouncing of Howard County League opponent Oakland Mills.

Lions quarterback Dalawn Parrish completed 11 of 16 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown.

Guy Smith (64 yards on 16 carries) and backfield mates Parrish, Scott Struther and Corey Curtis spearheaded a powerful running attack, and the defensive unit featuring Carlton Fox, Smith, Curtis McTavish, Brian Bush and Michael McClain provided the big hits to keep the Scorpions' wing-T offense at bay.

"We were really up for this game. Both the offense and defense did a great job," said Lions coach John Quinn. "All week during practice, we stressed ball-control offense, and that's what we did tonight."

Howard (6-1, 3-1 in league play) scored first in the second quarter, using a 19-play, 88-yard drive. Smith rushed for 47 yards on eight carries during the march.

Smith also showed his value as a blocker, sealing off linebacker Ricky Leon allowing Parrish to break loose for a crucial 12-yard first-down run.

With 1:30 remaining in the half, McTavish put the hosts up by two scores, with an 80-yard punt return for a touchdown. McTavish found himself hemmed inside the Howard 25-yard line where he dodged the first tackler and broke down the left sideline.

He then outran diving tackle attempts by Matt Rollman and punter Brandy Walker on his way to the end zone. Parrish passed to Bush for the two-point conversion.

With 34 seconds left in the third quarter, Parrish connected with Bush (six catches for 57 yards) on a 15-yard touchdown pass over the middle. Oakland Mills linebacker Paul Brown got a hand on the pass, but Bush gathered in the tip for six points. Fox (four receptions, 50 yards) made a clutch 19-yard catch on third-and-8 at the Scorpions' 28. Brian Holloway's extra-point attempt was good.

The Lions scored its final touchdown with 10 minutes left in the game on a 23-yard sweep around left end by Curtis. Holloway kicked his second extra point.

Oakland Mills (3-4, 2-2) reached the scoreboard with 6:28 left on a 1-yard run by fullback Lang Wethington. Wethington broke loose on a 35-yard -- earlier in the drive.

The first period saw both teams come up empty after promising drives. Following Sam Smith's interception at the Scorpions' 15, Oakland Mills marched 13 plays and 70 yards down to the Lions' 15 before stalling.

Signal-caller Chad Fekel spearheaded the drive with 30 yards on two carries and three pass completions for 15 yards.
