Chicago White Sox -- Placed DH George Bell on waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.

Cincinnati Reds -- Promoted scouting supervisors Jeff Barton to West Coast cross-checker; Clay Daniel to East Coast cross-checker; and Thomas Wilson to Midwest cross-checker.

Colorado Rockies -- Named former Orioles OF Dwight Evans batting and outfielders coach and Gene Glynn first-base coach. Announced that third-base coach Jerry Royster has declined an offer to remain with the team.

Los Angeles Dodgers -- Named Glenn Hoffman field coordinator; former Oriole Rick Dempsey manager of Triple-A Albuquerque; Tom Beyers manager of Double-A San Antonio; Jon Debus manager of their Single-A Vero Beach; former Oriole John Shelby manager of Single-A Bakersfield; and Joe Vavra manager of rookie-level Yakima. Monmouth, N.J. -- Announced that men's basketball coach Wayne Szoke has resigned as director of athletics effective when a replacement is found.

South Carolina -- Suspended following basketball players for one regular-season game: F-G Jamie Watson, G Durrant Williams and F Malik Russell.

Southern Mississippi -- Suspended basketball G Damien Smith for one semester for firing a pistol on campus.
