C. Milton Wright and Fallston were shutout winners at home in girls soccer games involving the top four teams in the Harford County League last week. Becky Gerhart scored off Amanda Fouts' assist as Wright (2-0, 5-0-1) edged North Harford (1-1, 6-1), 1-0. Fallston (2-0, 5-2), led by Anne West's two goals, whipped Bel Air (2-1, 5-2). Bel Air's Jackie Hinson had 17 saves.

Standouts at Fallston

Fallston senior Susan Mackley scored all the goals in a 3-0 field hockey victory last week over North Harford, and has five of her team's 11 goals in five games (4-0-1).

The only scores that have been allowed by goalkeeper Jenny Smith were in a 2-2 tie with Francis Scott Key.

Sophomore Beth Blasi leads the girls soccer team with seven goals and Susy Harrison preserved a shutout with 10 saves against Havre de Grace.

Kim Long, the only senior on the girls volleyball team, served for all her side's points in a 15-0 win during a five-game loss to Harford Tech.

Kernan Kelly, a 6-foot-6 junior, leads the boys volleyball team in kills.

Around the colleges

When Zach Thornton (Edgewood/John Carroll), a Loyola College junior, shut out St. Peter's, 2-0, last week, it lowered his goals-against average to 0.36, the third best mark in the nation. It was his 10th shutout in 12 starts for the 10-2 Greyhounds.

* Freshman forward Shane Dougherty (Fallston), last year's All-Metro Player of the Year, has started all 10 games (3-7) for the University of Maryland and is the team's fourth-leading scorer with a goal (against Cleveland State) and three assists.

Two of the assists came in last week's 2-0 win over Mount St. Mary's.
