PENNY MCNAMARA

October 10, 1993

PENNY MCNAMARA of Arnold has volunteered at Chesapeake Manor Nursing Home in Arnold since April 1989 when she was recruited through her church, visiting the residents as part of the county's Life Enrichment Program.

She also conducts what she calls a "transportation ministry," in which she provides transportation to grocery stores, doctors' appointments and the like for residents unable to get around.

Volunteer's comment: "Keeping busy is wonderful and, especially, meeting the needs of others is satisfying," Mrs. McNamara said. "When you're busy helping others, you feel good.

". . . I'm there just about every single day. I consider them my family," she said. "I do all sorts of little things for them.

"It's rewarding to see the smiles on all their faces, they're so grateful for anything you do for them.

"In my transportation ministry, I have about 15 people I take at different times to the store or to doctors' appointments," Mrs. McNamara said. "I call it a ministry since I do it for the Lord. My desire comes from him.

"I've been doing this for about 10 years. I started with the church -- if someone needed to go somewhere I'd take them. Then I began branching out," she said.

"In a way, I feel selfish because I love doing this. I put in a lot of hours, but I enjoy every minute of it. The first lady I ever took anywhere came back recently to see me and took me out to dinner."

About the volunteer: "I have a wonderful husband who supports me in my activities," said Mrs. McNamara, who has been married 41 years.

Mrs. McNamara is church treasurer at College Parkway Baptist. In 1992, she received the Governors Award for Volunteer of the Year for Seniors.
