An 8-year-old boy playing football in front of a church in the Park Heights area of Baltimore was shot in the leg last night when a gunbattle erupted nearby, police said.

David Marshell, of the 2500 block of Boarman Ave., around the corner from where he was shot, was treated at Johns Hopkins Hospital and released.

Lt. Wendell M. France of the Northern District police said that David and a friend were playing in front of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church when a brown Hyundai car pulled up in the 4300 block of Pimlico Road, near Cold Spring Lane, about 6:40 p.m. One man got out, turned and started firing at the three or four occupants, police said. The men inside returned fire as the man ran away, past the children.

Lieutenant France said one shot hit David in the right leg. "He was 50 yards from his back yard," he said.

"They always are shooting around here," said Elma Brown, 64, of Boarman Avenue. "You always hear the guns go off."
