Church to celebrate 150th anniversary

Sunday promises to be a big day at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in New Windsor, as the congregation celebrates the 150th anniversary of its church.

Six previous pastors will return to assist the Rev. Charles Acker with the 10:30 a.m. service.

The morning service will mark the 150th time the commemorative anniversary bell has been tolled. The bell has been rung 12 times per service for the last few months, six times to open Sunday service, six times to close the service, and at special functions to prepare it for Sunday's celebration.

The bell will be rung at the Sunday service as well. James Lantz, a 69-year member of the church, will ring the bell six times at the opening of the ceremony. He symbolizes the lifelong members of the church.

To close the service, six children under the age of 10 -- the church's hope for the future -- will ring the bell once each.

Pictures, articles and other memorabilia will be on display in the downstairs Sunday school room.

The Rev. Bernard Keels, Baltimore-Northwest District superintendent, will rededicate the church at a second service to be held at 3 p.m.

One highlight of the day will be the opening of the cornerstone outside the current church building. It will be the first time the stone has been moved since it was installed in 1897.

Mr. Acker hopes to find historical papers, coins and pictures of the original church that stood on the same site. He said today's church is the second built on the property, but there are no known pictures of the first one.

Church members would like to have as many people attend as possible, as the newsletter editor put it, to "fill St. Paul's to the rafters with your memories, your hopes, dreams and faith for the future." The nursery will be staffed during both services.

If you cannot attend, the day's events will be videotaped and available for purchase.

The great Purple Dinosaur will visit the Union Bridge Fire Co. this weekend and have breakfast in the activities hall.

Breakfast will be served from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

What does the Purple One like to eat? Why, everything on the menu -- pancakes, eggs, sausage, pudding and hominy, stewed apples, home fries, biscuits and muffins. A glass of juice and maybe a cup of coffee should help him wash down the most important meal of the day.

Although the Purple One eats free, we must pay $4.50. But, when someone else is cooking and the proceeds benefit the local fire company, who can quarrel?

Oh, Mr. Purple Dinosaur, get ready to shake a lot of hands. Approximately 1,500 people are expected.

St. Paul's United Methodist Church in New Windsor is holding an apple festival Oct. 16. Come and enjoy the delicious food they are preparing.

Gary Shields' fried chicken and crab cakes a la Doris Brown are area-famous items not to be missed. Both will be available as platters, along with hot dog and barbecue platters. You may choose two side dishes to complete your platter -- green beans, cole slaw, potato salad, Waldorf salad and applesauce. All meals come with a roll and choice of beverage.

If you would rather eat light, crab cake sandwiches, chicken quarters, barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs and chicken corn soup will be sold separately.

Apple pie, apple dumplings, apple crisp and apple harvest cake also will be sold separately. Add a piece to end your meal -- make mine a la mode -- or stop by the bake table for a different tempting treat.

All items will be reasonably priced. Prices start at 40 cents, and the most you will spend for a platter is $5.

The United Methodist Women will be selling homemade mincemeat there as well. Pick up a a half-pound container for $3.50. If you would like to order ahead of time, call Dorothy Lease, 635-2528.

The women expect to have two batches of mincemeat prepared for the sale. One batch takes five bushels of apples, 72 pounds of meat and suet, plus spices and cider.
