Major League Baseball -- Approved the sale of the Orioles to a group headed by Peter G. Angelos.

California Angels -- Claimed IF Mike Brumley off waivers from the Houston Astros; designated C John Orton for assignment; announced that Max Oliveras, the manager of Triple-A Vancouver, will join the staff as bullpen coach next season.

Cleveland Indians -- Fired Jose Morales, hitting coach; Ron Clark, infield coach; Dom Chiti, bullpen coach, and Ken Bolek, coaching assistant.

Florida Marlins -- Waived P Scott Chiamparino for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release. Assigned C Terry McGriff to Triple-A Edmonton.

Houston Astros -- Announced OF/IF Casey Candaele, IF Jim Lindeman and OF Rick Parker became free agents because they refused assignments to the minor leagues.

Kansas City Royals -- Fired Guy Hansen, pitching coach. Named Bruce Kison pitching coach and Jamie Quirk bullpen coach.

Pittsburgh Pirates -- Announced that the contracts of broadcasters Kent Derdivanis and Jim Rooker will not be renewed.

San Diego Padres -- Named Garry Templeton roving minor-league infield and base-running instructor.

Texas Rangers -- Announced they will not exercise the option on P Bob Patterson. Announced that C John Russell, 1B/DH Steve Balboni, former Orioles 2B Bill Ripken, OF Doug Dascenzo and OF Butch Davis have refused minor-league assignments and become free agents; signed P Rick Reed to a minor-league contract.

Basketball

Denver Nuggets -- Announced the retirement of F Scott Hastings, who will work for the club in community relations and as a broadcaster.

Los Angeles Lakers -- Re-signed restricted free-agent G Tony Smith.

New York Knicks -- Agreed to terms with free-agent F Anthony Bonner.

Indiana State -- Announced F Darrin Hancock has withdrawn from school to play professional basketball in Greece.

Seton Hall -- Named Lisa Morgan assistant track coach.

NFL Management Council -- Named John Jones director of labor administration and Bill Duffy director of compliance.

Cleveland Browns -- Waived C Lance Zeno. Signed OL Ron Milstead.

New York Giants -- Announced G Eric Moore was granted a one-game roster exemption by the NFL after his four-game suspension.

Philadelphia Eagles -- Agreed to terms with QB Ken O'Brien on a one-year contract.

National Hockey League -- Suspended St. Louis Blues C Jim Montgomery for four games and fined him $500 for a high-sticking incident in a game against the Detroit Red Wings Thursday.

Anaheim Mighty Ducks -- Assigned C Jarrod Skalde, LW Lonnie Loach and D Scott Chartier to San Diego of the International Hockey League.

Buffalo Sabres -- Assigned LW Jason Dawe to Rochester of the American Hockey League.

Hartford Whalers -- Signed LW Brian Propp to a one-year contract.

Los Angeles Kings -- Assigned D Bobby Jay, D Dominic Lavote, D Brian Chapman, F Marc Fortier, F Rob Murphy, F Dave Thomlinson and F Robert Lang to Phoenix of the International Hockey League.

New Jersey Devils -- Sent C David Emma and C Jim Dowd to Albany of the American Hockey League; named Mike Miller to their radio broadcast team as play-by-play announcer.
