Geiger in NCAA's field for executive director

October 03, 1993|By Paul McMullen

Maryland athletic director Andy Geiger confirmed yesterday that he has been nominated for executive director of the NCAA and that he will interview for the position this week.

Geiger, the Terps' athletic director since 1990, is among an undetermined number of candidates for a job that opened in May, when Dick Schultz announced his resignation. Schultz, who will step down when a successor is found, resigned after reports surfaced that linked him to improper loans to Virginia players while he was athletic director there.

"I don't think it's the finals," Geiger said when asked how many candidates remained. "Other than to confirm that I've been nominated and that they've invited me to visit, I have no comment."

Geiger, who will be interviewed at NCAA headquarters later this week, has served as athletic director at Brown, Pennsylvania and Stanford before coming to Maryland.

He serves on the NCAA's special committee to review financial conditions and had been on the men's basketball committee.
