Name: Richard N. Arnold of Ellicott City.

Hobbies and other activities: Mr. Arnold is a retired real estate agent. Before becoming a real estate agent, he worked at Fishpaw Painting, his grandfather's contracting painting business. He works part time for American Greeting Cards. Mr. Arnold has been active for 17 years at First Presbyterian Church of Howard County. He has served on several church committees. Mr. Arnold also was involved in the Boy Scouts of America in many capacities from the local to district levels.

Organization's comments: "Mr. Arnold has been a dedicated and committed volunteer since January 1984," said Jeanette Lazarofsky, program administrator of Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland in Howard County. "It is our pleasure to recognize Dick. His commitment, enthusiasm and, more importantly, his concern for the nutritional welfare of our clients is commendable."

Mr. Arnold drives every volunteer route in Howard County as a substitute driver. Last year he drove more than 950 miles as a substitute. In addition, for the past three years, he has served on the Council of Site Representatives representing Howard County. Last year, Mr. Arnold was elected to chair the Council of Site Representatives, an executive committee position on the board of directors.

Volunteer's comments: "I was at loose ends," Mr. Arnold said about his retirement. "And someone suggested Meals on Wheels. It's been very interesting to learn the details. Once I got into it, I got hooked. We really need more people to volunteer. People get sick or move away, etc."

A typical route may last 1 1/2 to 2 hours, depending on the area covered. If the persons who receive the meals need additional support, such as cutting up of the food delivered or taking the garbage out or walking the dog, Mr. Arnold is there to help.

About Mr. Arnold: He has lived in Ellicott City for 18 years. He and his wife, Harriett, have two daughters, Cynthia and Deborah, and two grandchildren.
