A 2-year-old East Baltimore boy shot in the left thigh Friday night while sitting outdoors with his mother was released from the Johns Hopkins Children's Center yesterday.

Lamont Aki Holt was treated at the center after he was wounded about 6 p.m. Friday during what police said was a gunfight two blocks away in which two men fired at least 21 shots from automatic weapons.

The battle in the 1500 block of E. Chase St. sent neighbors scrambling.

Raylette Jones said yesterday her son Lamont was struck on the front steps of their home in the 1700 block of E. Chase St., while sitting next to her and his 14-month-old brother, Antonio, whom she was holding.

Ms. Jones said she pulled her sons inside and didn't realize Lamont had been hit until she saw his leg bleeding.

"He's very lucky," said Ms. Jones, 20. "I guess God was with him. He could've been shot somewhere else."

Her family and neighbors said their East Baltimore neighborhood once was safe, but is now a drug-infested area where gunshots frequently fill the air.

"It's very scary, because you get used to it," said neighbor Linwood Grady. "But that's a hell of a thing to get used to."
