Suspect charged in bogus call on man thrown from bridge

A Baltimore man was charged with filing a false report after his emergency call about someone throwing a man off a bridge in Linthicum triggered a large rescue operation yesterday.

Jeffrey Edward Watkins, 30, of the 4300 block of Annapolis Road, was arrested at the scene after he admitted making the call, a police report says.

Police said they received an anonymous call at 6:18 p.m. from a pay phone at the light rail station in the 6800 block of Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd.

The caller said he saw a man, whom he identified as Jeffrey Watkins, thrown from the bridge.

The train station is about 100 yards from the bridge, which runs over a creek.

Dozens of police officers and rescue workers searched the area but did not find a body. Baltimore County officers involved in the search saw Mr. Watkins running from the area and told Anne Arundel police that Mr. Watkins had a history of making false reports.

An officer spotted Mr. Watkins sitting inside a light rail car stopped at the station.
