Fire department to hold annual open house WEST COUNTY -- Crofton * Odenton * Fort Meade * Gambrills

October will be a busy month for the Odenton Volunteer Fire Department.

From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Company 28 will hold its annual open house, which coincides with fire prevention week.

Highlights include Sparky the Clown, Smokey the Bear, refreshments for the family, tours of the Fire Department, and fire and safety information for children.

The fire house is on Route 175, just south of Route 32.


The Faith Community Church Ladies Fall Luncheon is being held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, 1306 Waugh Chapel Road in Gambrills.

Participants will make chrysanthemum turkey centerpieces. The fee is $4.

The luncheon's guest speaker is Colleen Benoit. Please bring a hot glue gun, scissors and a covered dish or dessert. A nursery will be provided.

The Fort Meade Retired Officers' Wives' Club has scheduled its monthly luncheon for 11 a.m. Oct. 5 at the Fort Meade Officers Club. Representatives from Fidos for Freedom Inc. -- a Laurel company that trains dogs to help disabled people -- will bring their dogs for a demonstration.

Reservations are required by noon Thursday.

Arundel High School underclass photos will be taken at 8 a.m. Oct. 7. Several backgrounds will be available to enhance your child's portrait. Identification cards will be made at the same time pictures are taken.

Orders must be paid in advance. Details and envelopes will be sent home with the students before the photo sessions.

The sale of school pictures is a school fund-raising activity. The school receives 30 percent of the proceeds or $1.25 for each student photographed, whichever is greater.

Senior photo makeup sessions are scheduled for tomorrow by appointment.


The Waugh Chapel Elementary School PTA is sponsoring a Yard Sale and Craft Fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 16.

Indoor table rentals are: 4-foot, $8; 5-foot, $10; and 6-foot, $12. Ten-foot tables outside may be rented for $12.

Dorothy Bowser, an instructor at Anne Arundel Community College, will conduct a 10-week course in basic sewing for beginners, from 10 a.m. to noon beginning Oct. 5 at the O'Malley Senior Center, 1275 Odenton Road.

Students will learn to read, cut and sew a basic pattern. Sewing machines and some basic sewing accessories are available at the center. A supply list will be available at the first class. Registration is required.
